Christmas Gifts for Your Wife

Why the obvious categories disappoint, what to do instead, and how to use the one advantage you have that nobody else does.

You have one advantage nobody else shopping for her has: you were there. You know what she said about her knife being blunt, what she gave up when the second child arrived, and which photograph she keeps meaning to get printed.

Almost every good gift here is just that advantage, used. Almost every disappointing one is a category chosen because it is a category.

Sentimental works, but only if it is specific

The reason "sentimental" gifts have a bad reputation is that most of them are generic objects with a word printed on them. A gift is sentimental because of the information in it, not the shape of it.

Costs almost nothing and takes an hour. The hour is the gift — that is not a consolation, it is the mechanism.

One photograph, properly printed and framed, beats a digital frame of four hundred. The choosing is the part she will notice.

Buy the thing she will not buy herself

There is a reliable category: the upgrade of something she already uses daily and has not replaced because it still technically works.

⚠️ One caution. This only works if she actually enjoys cooking. Kitchen equipment given to somebody who cooks because somebody has to is not a gift, it is a comment on the division of labour. Be honest about which house you live in.

Time is the gift most people want and few people give

An experience has a hidden cost people forget: somebody has to arrange the childcare, clear the date, and book it. If you give the experience and leave her to organise it, you have given her an errand. Do the arranging as part of the gift.

What to skip

Anything that improves her. No gym memberships, no self-help, no appliances that imply a standard.

A surprise that creates work. A puppy, a holiday she has to take leave for, a redecorated room.

"Something for the house." Unless she has asked for it specifically, a gift for the house is a gift for both of you, and she will notice.

If you genuinely do not know

Ask her to write a list, and mean it. The idea that a list ruins the surprise is mostly held by people who enjoy the surprise more than the receiver does.

Most families find the list makes December better for everyone — she gets something she wanted, and you stop guessing in a shop on the 23rd.
